Margaretha Zelle (Leeuwarden, 1876)

Margaretha Zelle was born on August 7, 1876, in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands. Her early life was characterized by the family’s wealth and subsequent bankruptcy, as well as her mother’s passing, which led to her relocation to Leiden. After being expelled from school due to advances made by the headmaster, young Margaretha moved to the Dutch East Indies.

Mata Hari, “eye of dawn”

In the East-Indies she was astonished by temple dances. Returning to Europe after a short-lived marriage, she started to perform these ‘danses hindoues’. Her show at the Musee Guimet in Paris made her an overnight star, with richt and powerful suitors lying at her feet. She started performing and traveling all over Europe, on the verge of WW1..
